Your Guide through the 2015 Elections

If you cringe at the thought of talking about politics, you’re not the only one.

Participating in the world of politics has always seemed like a daunting task to me, especially since no one has ever truly explained just how the governments my vote is meant to help shape are shaped or why.

I used to be quite apathetic about the political process in Canada because I didn’t feel like my vote mattered.

After seeing this post on Facebook,

and this conversation in the comment section of a story by the Calgary Herald,

I became intrigued to know how many people felt the same way….

According to Statistics Canada, the the voter turnout in Alberta in 2011 was just 56 per cent!

“Approximately 14.8 million of the 24.3 million citizens on the electoral list cast a ballot, for a turnout rate of 61%. Provinces with higher-than-average voting rates included Prince Edward Island (73%), New Brunswick (66%), Saskatchewan (63%) and Quebec (63%). Those with lower rates included Newfoundland and Labrador (53%), Alberta (56%) and Manitoba (59%). Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia had turnout rates close to the national average”. It says.

This was for a Federal election. Rates are lower for provincial votes.

It’s time for that to change.

If you plan to exert your right to vote this year, here’s what you need to know:

  • In November, 2011, Alison Redford’s PC government amended the Alberta Elections Act to include a provision for fixed election dates. This fixed election law is incompatible with the Westminster Parliamentary system.
  • On December 17th, 2014 the former leader of the opposition (Wildrose party), Danielle Smith, crossed over to join the Progressive Conservatives along with 9 of her Wild Rose colleagues.
  • Smith lost in her bid to join the Progressive Conservative government and has since retired from politics.
  • Current Alberta Premier, Jim Prentice, called for an election a year earlier than Redford’s law would have placed it; the call for an early election could be considered unethical by some standards, but is not illegal due to the fact that the fixed election law was not sound.
  • This election is going to decide who sits in the 87 seats in AB parliament.
  • The parties have until 2:00pm on April 17 to submit candidate nominations for the May 5, 2015 vote.
  • You can find out where you need to go and what you need to do to vote here.

I can’t help but feel that if people knew more about the representatives they are voting in to Parliament instead of blanket statements that represent the party as a whole, change would be inevitable.

A local Edmonton man, Dave Cournoyer, has made it his mission to gather as much information as he possibly can about candidates for both the federal and provincial elections and presents it on his blog. He has been a trusted source of political news for a few years now- despite the fact that this is not his full-time job.
